Backburner Art #12e- Rain World: The Watcher (Artificer)
I give up. End me.

Artificer's final boss wasn't as bad as I remember it being. I guess actually knowing how I won against them the first time helped with that. I essentially embedded spears everywhere so that the chief can't use them against me, then exploded them with a grenade and started mauling. At some point the chieftain scavenger, armorless from bombs, and wounded by Arti's teeth, decided to just stand there. I took the time to just spear them, and that was the last hit I needed to kill them. To me, it felt like the scav just gave up.

So that's what this piece is referring to. The Chieftain Scavenger is in the pose of "just end me," with Arti giving an aside glance like "you've GOT to be kidding me."

Being in the colosseum on top of Metropolis, the city that resides on the top of Five Pebble's can, of course all of the ground is going to look like rubbish, but there is also two notable girders, one small and one very big. There's also a pole that has a lantern, which is giving most of the light. There is another unseen one behind the hill, lighting the second hill up.

It took a while to figure out how to draw a scavenger, and even then, the Chieftain is not a typical scav. They apparently have no antlers (to my knowledge; regardless, it made them easier to draw), no other design features on their head, and they've got dark brown fur, with a stubby tail. Their mask I chose to simplify a bit, it has a bit more craziness in the antlers. No beads are on because they all got sent flying after the first bomb, and speaking of stuff that got knocked off from the explosive, they also lack their 3-piece red centipede armor. They also have char on their face, and some bite marks.

Part of what helped me draw Chieftain is Northflowo, who has a stream up where they were doing some animation for the Artificer Vs Chieftain, so some ideas on how to draw this character came from her. Obviously, I didn't copy it (that would be plagiarism). The scavengers are described as monkey/ape-like in design, mainly the knuckle walking and primate intelligence. So, I made their arms longer than their legs. Chieftain has some fluff, so I made sure to convey that without having to literally draw every strand (y'know, like how I do hair or fur in my style). In addition to simplifying the mask, I also took a deliberate detour from the way other people seem to draw it: the symbol.

In-game, the mask has the 3rd Karma symbol on it, which represents community or friendship or whatever. There is a Passage symbol called the Chieftain, which has that at the top part, with an additional design down at the bottom. My research showed that many people drew the Chieftain symbol on the mask, which makes sense seeing that they're the Chieftain. I, however, like doing these as close to what they look like in the game as I can (I only looked up other references because it's actually difficult seeing what his design is like in the game), so I kept the sprite's symbol.

Both the explosion char on the Chieftain & the scar that Artificer has were done using the Charcoal brush I made, and at least for Arti, it fits. I think I could've done better with the soot on Chieftain though. I still kept that brush I used the last time I drew soot on a character (Pokemon Crystal's Main Campaign), I really should've used that.

The rim lighting they both have were mostly due to needing a lighter color to separate the scav and the scug from themselves and the background, value-wise. It ended up making them look cooler.

The last bit is that I have a barely-noticeable filter over everything. I used the main light color of the lantern's color for it, so that it ties everything in together, and it makes Arti's colors pop a bit more and I love it.
