Backlog Art #27- Yoshi's Island

Background practice, water, and a neat little island.

Backlog Art #27- Yoshi's Island
Next time, yoshies. Next time...

The final bit of catch-up on the Completion Art. It's finally done, and I'm honestly quite proud of this.

First up, Kamek. I had planned on having Baby Bowser hanging off the broom too, but I couldn't figure out how to make him fit on there. So, instead, there's a little bindle on the end of the broom, as if Kamek's carrying something (or someone) in there. Was a bit worried that Kamek himself wouldn't look that good, but he looks alright here.

The island was pretty fun to make. Each part of that island is its own separate object. Each mountain, hill, tree, cliff, volcano, flowers. It was really fun, and then I added shading and it really ties it all together. It makes me hopeful, that eventually I can draw good backgrounds.

Now, what is there to an island if there isn't any water. I tried a few things with this, to make the water have a sheen on it, but eventually I just had the colors get brighter near the horizon, then the second-darkest color adds wave textures to the darkest color. I also added the waves on the shores, so that it really looks like the island's in the water.

I wanted to try and render this piece without a gradient, but I eventually had to cave in. I didn't want to rely on them too much, but there are certain circumstances that they work best in (like making the sky around the sun look warmer). I'm gonna have to refine my art style to see where gradients are needed the most. Hey, at least it works here, and it doesn't look gross.
