Frights Art #5- IMSCARED

Simple perspective, lineless, and glitches, oh my.

Frights Art #5- IMSCARED
I BEGGED YOU, AND YOU IGNORED MY REQUEST - WHAT DO YOU THINK WILL HAPPEN NEXT?

IMSCARED is a phenomenal game for its time. It's amazing how much this game can scare you despite only using pixels for an art style. Really putting that "Pixelated Nightmare" subtitle to good use.

First thing, the lineless art approach I did for Bhuster and Bramble. You might recall me doing this previously, with the Chillin' Stream art where I played Mosa Lina. I love lineart, but it's always fun every once in a while to break away from that. If anything overlapping another thing matches the color that it overlaps, or that it could overlap, it gets a darker blend. Hence why Bhuster's nose and ears look different, and why the pattern on Bramble's ears aren't the exact same color as her hair. Bhuster's robe collar has the same effect too, but through some use of planning (wanting Bhuster to carry a file, like the one IMSCARED puts on the desktop), I didn't have to do that with the robe's sleeves. I have wanted to do some more lineless art, but due to the fact that I'm gonna have to find ways to separate shapes that are the same color from each other, I haven't done as much of it, except for a few times here (Baba Is You, Chillin' 1, Jazzpunk).

The latter game was an exception, as I mostly only worked with two colors, and had to find clever ways to show details. It was a limitation that brought more innovation. Meanwhile, here I have more colors, and I'm trying not to have them be incomprehensible.

The background, though simple, is effective nonetheless. Using the Assistant tools that Krita has, I drew the bare room with white lines, added the "wooden" boards with the same color, then behind it all I filled it with black.

Really, the only thing I wasn't happy with here is how White Face looks. He's supposed to be glitching, like he does in the final "showdown" in the game (spoilers, but really, were you gonna figure that out, let alone figure out what happens next?). However, I couldn't find out how to effectively make it look like it's glitching the way it did in the game. Color aberration doesn't work here, for obvious reasons (color aberration is that weird VHS effect where you can see a red-green-blue fade images of things; google it if that doesn't help explain it, as I can't figure out how to describe it well). The only thing I thought of to do before I finished this piece is using the rectangle selection tool to highlight random-yet-specific sections, then through use of the move tool (and repetition) (and repetition), shift them around enough to give the glitchy look that I was going for. It's not exactly what I was going for, but it had to do.

Lastly, I could've drawn White Face better. Not that it matters, since I had to mangle him/HER anyways.
